Blocked in mainland China

Does Google Maps Work in China?

No, Google Maps is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. It loads on a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, or with a VPN, but its street map of mainland China is still offset from your GPS position. Apple Maps and Amap work without a VPN, and your location lines up with their maps.

Before you fly

  • Install Amap and set it to English. A visitor guide on a Chinese university's conference site says to pick English after you download it, then enter your phone number to get a verification code.
  • Pick an eSIM that routes data outside mainland China if you want Google Maps on mobile data. Airalo says its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs do. It won't help on hotel Wi-Fi.
  • Don't rely on Google Maps offline maps. Jetpac says they don't work accurately in China. Airalo's writer found navigation, search and transit directions useless without Google's servers.

What happens when you open Google Maps in China

Google Maps is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. The UK government lists Google among the services that are permanently blocked in China. Comparitech, a VPN review site with affiliate links, says Google services are completely blocked in mainland China, and names Maps among them. Airalo, an eSIM provider, says Google, including Maps, is generally inaccessible on local networks.

GreatFire Analyzer, which tests websites from mainland China, lists maps.google.com as blocked. Its latest test was on September 24, 2026.

What you see varies. A writer on Airalo’s blog says that in Xi’an they “opened Google Maps, and watched as the app just…didn’t load.” Jetpac, an eSIM seller, says the app may load partially. You might see a static map, but directions, traffic and nearby places won’t work.

Maps you downloaded at home don’t fix this. Airalo’s writer says previously downloaded map data still shows, but real-time navigation, search and public transit directions are “pretty much useless” without Google’s servers. Jetpac says Google Maps in China doesn’t work accurately even offline.

On a travel eSIM or home roaming

Google Maps loads on a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China. Airalo says its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs route traffic through gateways outside the mainland, so you don’t need a VPN. MyChinaGuide, a China travel site that recommends eSIMs, says the connection roams out through a foreign network, typically Hong Kong or Singapore, so your traffic never reaches the Great Firewall. See Airalo in China.

Check that a plan says it routes data outside mainland China before you buy. Compare plans on our eSIM page.

Roaming on your home SIM can work too. A visitor guide for a 2026 conference, on an event site of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), says roaming data routes through your home country’s servers, which allows access to Google Maps. Ask your carrier what roaming in China costs.

Either way, it only works on mobile data. Airalo says you have full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. The USTC guide says Google Maps may not work reliably on local networks or Wi-Fi.

The map is still offset. MyChinaGuide says Google Maps will be offset “whether the firewall is in the way or not”, so you still want a local map app. For when an eSIM is enough, see eSIM or VPN for China?

With a VPN

A VPN connects your phone to a server outside China, which gets Google Maps past the block on mobile data or Wi-Fi. It doesn’t fix the map. Hidden China Travel, a site that sells China tours, says that with a VPN, “You can open it, and it’ll look normal.” It adds that the location data is still offset by up to 500 meters because of China’s coordinate system, and “the VPN doesn’t fix that.” MyChinaGuide says that even when you force Google Maps to load through a VPN, “the map itself is wrong.”

VPN connections in China can be unreliable. Yale’s IT team says that even with a VPN, not all sites are available and VPN service can be inconsistent. The UK government notes that China’s cybersecurity laws say VPNs need to be licensed by the Chinese government. Read Is a VPN legal in China? and compare the VPNs we track on our VPN page. Why Google Maps is wrong in China

Google’s street map of mainland China doesn’t line up with GPS or with Google’s own satellite imagery. The cause is China’s map rules, not your connection.

Wikipedia says private surveying and mapping have been illegal in mainland China since 2002, under the Surveying and Mapping Law. China’s State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping uses a coordinate system called GCJ-02. It’s based on WGS-84, the standard your phone’s GPS reports, but adds apparently random offsets to latitude and longitude. MyChinaGuide says China requires all licensed maps to use it.

Google has worked with AutoNavi, a Chinese map provider, since 2006 to source its maps of China. Wikipedia says Google uses GCJ-02 data for its street map but doesn’t shift its satellite imagery, which stays on WGS-84. The street map is offset by 50 to 500 meters from the satellite imagery, and a GPS position placed on a GCJ-02 map can be 100 to 700 meters from your real location.

In practice, your blue dot lands in the wrong place. Airalo’s writer says it could show them “on a parallel street or across a river” from where they were. Hidden China Travel describes a blue dot “standing in a river when you’re on the bridge next to it.”

The data can be old as well. Trip.com, which sells China eSIMs, says Google’s “map data is often old or offset”. Hidden China Travel says business listings go stale and transit routes lag behind actual schedules.

Apple Maps and Amap line up with GPS

Map apps licensed in China don’t have this problem. Wikipedia says authorized providers, such as AutoNavi and Apple Maps, must buy a “shift correction” algorithm that lets them plot GPS locations correctly on the map. MyChinaGuide says Apple Maps, Amap and Baidu Maps all work without a VPN because they use China’s licensed map data.

  • Apple Maps is built into iPhones. MyChinaGuide says that inside mainland China it switches to Amap’s licensed data. Airalo’s writer says Apple’s data is aligned with China’s coordinate system, so “location pins actually land where you are.” Apple lists China mainland among the places with turn-by-turn navigation, traffic and transit in Apple Maps. See Apple Maps in China.
  • Amap (Gaode) comes from AutoNavi. Shanghai’s government says it supports English and 14 other languages, with navigation for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, and an English ride-hailing screen. MyChinaGuide says its English mode translates place names and transit directions and shows subway exit numbers.
  • Baidu Maps uses its own coordinate system, BD-09, according to Wikipedia. Airalo’s writer says its interface is fully in Chinese, and MyChinaGuide suggests treating it as a backup unless you read Chinese.

FAQ

Does Google Maps work in China now?

No. GreatFire Analyzer, which tests websites from mainland China, listed maps.google.com as blocked in its latest test, on September 24, 2026. Airalo says Google, including Maps, is generally inaccessible on Chinese networks.

Does Google Maps work in China with a VPN?

It loads when the VPN connects, but the street map is still offset from your GPS position. Hidden China Travel says the VPN doesn't fix that, because the offset comes from China's coordinate system. Apple Maps and Amap don't have this problem.

Does Google Maps work in China with an eSIM?

Yes, on a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, such as Airalo's China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs. It only helps on mobile data, not hotel Wi-Fi. The map is still offset from your GPS position.

Why is Google Maps wrong in China?

China requires licensed maps to use GCJ-02, a coordinate system that shifts positions away from the GPS standard. Google's street map of China uses it, but your phone's GPS position and Google's satellite imagery don't, so they don't line up. Wikipedia says the street map sits 50 to 500 meters off the satellite imagery.

What can I use instead of Google Maps in China?

Apple Maps on an iPhone, or Amap, which has an English version. Both work without a VPN and use licensed Chinese map data, so your location lines up with the streets. Baidu Maps works too, but its interface is in Chinese.

Does Google Maps work in Hong Kong and Macau?

Yes. The block applies to mainland China, and Comparitech says Google services remain available in Hong Kong and Macau. Wikipedia says mainland China's map restrictions don't apply there either.
