Of the four providers we track, only Holafly sells a plan for just mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau: unlimited data, with 3 days for $11.90. Airalo, Nomad and Saily cover all three in wider regional plans. Only Airalo says its regional plan routes your data outside mainland China, so blocked apps work without a VPN.
- Holafly's eSIM for Hong Kong, Macau and China is unlimited, from $11.90 for 3 days to $76.50 for 30 days. That is the same price as its China-only eSIM.
- Nomad's Greater China plan also covers Taiwan, from $5.00 for 1 GB over 7 days. Airalo's Asia plan covers 18 countries and Saily's Asia and Oceania plan covers 22.
- Airalo says its Regional Asia eSIM routes data through gateways outside mainland China, so no VPN is needed. We found no routing claim for the other three plans.
- Holafly's and Saily's China-only eSIMs don't work in Hong Kong or Macau, both providers say.
Which providers sell one plan
| Provider | Plan | Covers | Cheapest plan | Routing in mainland China |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Holafly | Hong Kong, Macau and China | Those three only | Unlimited, 1 day, €3.90 (no US dollar price shown) | Not stated on the plan page |
| Nomad | Greater China | Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan | 1 GB, 7 days, $5.00 | Not stated on the plan page |
| Airalo | Asia | 18 countries, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao | 1 GB, 3 days, $4.00 | Outside mainland China, Airalo says |
| Saily | Asia and Oceania | 22 countries, including China, Hong Kong and Macau | 1 GB, 7 days, $4.99 | No claim found |
Holafly’s and Saily’s China-only plans won’t cover the trip. Holafly says its China eSIM “is designed for use in mainland China only” and that you need a separate eSIM for Hong Kong or Taiwan. Saily says its China plan won’t work in Hong Kong or Macau, because both are special administrative regions.
The China-only plans are covered on our Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily pages. Airalo vs Holafly for China compares two of them.

Routing in mainland China
On the mainland, blocked apps such as WhatsApp and Google work on an eSIM only if the plan sends your data outside mainland China first. eSIM or VPN for China? explains how this works. Here is what each provider says about these plans:
- Airalo: a VPN is “NOT required” on its “China eSIM, Regional Asia eSIM, and Global eSIM”. Airalo says “your traffic is routed through secure gateways outside mainland China”.
- Holafly: the page for this plan doesn’t describe routing or name a network. It says you can call and message through apps such as WhatsApp. Holafly’s routing FAQ says it uses “home-routed roaming” through “international gateways”, but doesn’t say which eSIMs this covers. Its China-only eSIM page says WhatsApp, Google and Instagram work “without installing an additional VPN”.
- Nomad: the Greater China page doesn’t say. A Nomad blog post on Hong Kong and Macau says its regional Asia plans also cover China, and that you wouldn’t need a separate VPN in Shenzhen. It doesn’t name the Greater China plan.
- Saily: we found no routing claim for the Asia and Oceania plan. Saily’s China page says you need a VPN for WhatsApp in China. Our Saily page covers its conflicting claims about the China plan.
This only applies to the eSIM’s mobile data. Airalo says you get full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. For Wi-Fi, see VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China.

FAQ
Does a China eSIM work in Hong Kong?
Not from Holafly or Saily. Holafly says its China eSIM is designed for mainland China only. Saily says its China plan won't work in Hong Kong or Macau. Buy a plan that lists every place you will visit.
Which eSIM covers mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau in one plan?
Holafly sells one for just those three, with unlimited data and 3 days for $11.90. Nomad's Greater China plan adds Taiwan. Airalo's Asia plan and Saily's Asia and Oceania plan cover all three among many other countries.
Will WhatsApp work in mainland China on these plans?
Airalo says yes for its Regional Asia eSIM, because your data is routed outside mainland China. Holafly's page for its combined plan mentions WhatsApp but doesn't describe routing. We found no routing claim from Nomad or Saily for these plans. Set up a VPN before you go as a backup.
Does the eSIM help on hotel Wi-Fi in mainland China?
No. The routing only applies to the eSIM's mobile data. Airalo says you get full access to blocked sites as long as you use the eSIM data and not the hotel Wi-Fi.
