Yes. You can register for WeChat with a foreign phone number and link a credit or debit card issued outside mainland China to Weixin Pay, the payment service inside WeChat. You don't need a Chinese bank account. Payments under 200 yuan have no fee, and payments over 200 yuan carry a 3% fee. Verified users can pay up to US$5,000 at a time and US$50,000 a year.
- Register with your home number. It only has to receive SMS codes.
- Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover, Diners Club and UnionPay cards can be linked if they were issued outside mainland China.
- Verify your identity with your passport to get the full limits of US$5,000 per payment and US$50,000 a year.
- Payments under 200 yuan have no fee. Above that, the fee is 3% of the whole payment.
Set it up before you fly
WeChat’s help pages call the payment service Weixin Pay.
- Install WeChat, or update it to the latest version.
- Register with your home mobile number, or sign in. You don’t need a +86 number, but yours has to receive SMS verification codes.
- Go to Me, then Pay and Services, then Wallet.
- Tap Bank Cards, then Add a Bank Card. Read the Weixin Pay User Service Agreement and Privacy Policy, then tap Agree.
- Enter your identity details, then your card details, and follow the prompts.

Which cards work
Tencent says you can link a credit or debit card from:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express
- JCB
- Discover Global Network, including Diners Club
- UnionPay
The card must be issued outside mainland China. Beijing’s government listed the same brands in March 2026.

Identity verification and limits
| Limit | Amount |
|---|---|
| Each payment | Up to US$5,000 |
| Total per year | Up to US$50,000 |
Tencent says these limits are for verified international users. It announced them in April 2024, up from US$1,000 per payment and US$10,000 a year. Shanghai’s government gives the same figures for foreign cards on Weixin Pay and Alipay.
Tencent says you raise your limit by completing identity verification. We could not confirm the limits before verification.

Fees
| Payment | Service fee |
|---|---|
| Under 200 yuan | None |
| Over 200 yuan | 3% of the full payment |
The 3% applies to the whole payment, not just the part above 200 yuan, according to Shanghai’s government and a January 2026 notice from Tenpay, which handles international card payments in WeChat. A 500 yuan payment adds 15 yuan. If you get a refund, WeChat refunds part of the fee, in line with the amount refunded.
New users get a waiver. Tencent said in May 2026 that first-time users who link an international card pay no card fee on up to 1,000 yuan of spending a day, for 90 days from their first payment. A March 2026 notice from Beijing’s government described a 60-day version of this offer. WeChat says the payment page in the app has the details.
Ask your bank whether it adds its own foreign transaction fee.

What a foreign card can’t do
WeChat says international cards work for everyday purchases in mainland China. They don’t support red packets or money transfers. You can pay a shop or a restaurant, but you can’t send money to a friend to split a bill.
Paying without linking a card
Tencent says some overseas e-wallet apps can scan Weixin Pay QR codes, so you can pay without installing WeChat. Tencent announced in May 2026 that PayPal users would be able to pay at Weixin Pay merchants by scanning QR codes, starting with U.S. PayPal users. PayPal said the service went live for U.S. PayPal users in August 2026.
WeChat Pay and Alipay
Alipay also takes foreign cards, and Shanghai’s government lists the same limits and fees for both. Setting up both gives you a backup if one card link fails. See Alipay for foreigners for its setup, and WeChat in China for the app itself.
