Does YouTube Work in China?
No, YouTube is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi, in the app, on the website and in videos embedded on other sites. It works on a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, and often on home roaming, as long as your phone stays off Wi-Fi. A VPN can also get you in, but video often buffers or drops on one.
Your options
Set these up before you fly.
Before you fly
- Buy and install a travel eSIM at home. Pick one that routes data outside mainland China. Provider websites are likely blocked once you're in China.
- Install and test a VPN at home. You'll need it on hotel Wi-Fi. MyChinaGuide says VPN websites are filtered in China, and app stores there hide or restrict VPN apps.
- Download videos if you pay for Premium. Outside the YouTube Music app, Premium benefits don't work in mainland China. YouTube says videos you download before you travel stay available offline for 30 days.
- Choose a video quality for mobile data. Under Settings, then Video quality preferences, you can set one quality for mobile networks and another for Wi-Fi. YouTube says Higher picture quality uses more data.
What happens when you open YouTube in China
YouTube is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. The UK government’s travel advice lists YouTube among services that are permanently blocked in China, with Google, Facebook and X. A July 2026 guide for Australian tourists in the Bega District News says China has completely blocked Google services, including YouTube.
MyChinaGuide, which makes a China travel app, says that on a normal Chinese connection the app and the website show a permanent spinning wheel or time out. BitJoy, an eSIM seller, says the block covers hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi and local mobile data. It applies to the YouTube app, the website and YouTube videos embedded in other sites.
Websites embed YouTube videos from youtube.com, or from youtube-nocookie.com if they use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode. GreatFire keeps test histories for youtube.com and youtube-nocookie.com.
A Chinese SIM card doesn’t help. The Bega District News says that on hotel and café Wi-Fi, or on a SIM card bought when you arrive, these apps are still blocked. Other Google services are blocked too: see Google Search and Gmail.
On a roaming eSIM or home roaming
A travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China gets around the block. Airalo, an eSIM provider, names YouTube among the apps that are generally inaccessible on local networks. It says its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs use international data routing, so you don’t need a VPN. MyChinaGuide says this kind of eSIM usually sends your data out through Hong Kong or Singapore, and that YouTube then opens normally. See our Airalo page.
Not every eSIM works this way. Salil Kanhere, a cybersecurity expert at UNSW, told the Bega District News that certain travel eSIMs bypass mainland filtering through offshore gateways such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia. A local Chinese SIM or a China-specific eSIM, he said, typically remains subject to local filtering. Check how a plan routes data before you buy, and compare plans on our eSIM page.
Roaming on your home SIM can work the same way. Kanhere says roaming data is in many cases routed through your home carrier or an overseas gateway, so some apps that are usually blocked might still work. Ask your carrier what roaming in China costs.
Either way, it only works on mobile data. Airalo says you have full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. MyChinaGuide says that once you join hotel, café, airport or restaurant Wi-Fi, your traffic goes back through Chinese infrastructure and is filtered again.
To save data, YouTube lets you set one video quality for mobile networks and another for Wi-Fi, under Settings, then Video quality preferences. It says Higher picture quality uses more data.
With a VPN
A VPN also gets you past the block, and it’s the option on hotel Wi-Fi, where a roaming eSIM doesn’t help. Video is the weak point. MyChinaGuide says VPNs have become increasingly unreliable since an April 2026 crackdown, when China’s three carriers began blocking VPN-signature IP addresses on detection. It says a VPN that works for email can collapse when you press play on a video, and that video often buffers or drops even when a VPN connects. BitJoy says many travelers report that YouTube works one moment and buffers the next.
Install and test the VPN before you fly. MyChinaGuide says VPN provider websites are filtered in mainland China, and that the App Store and Google Play there hide or restrict VPN apps. Compare the VPNs we track on our VPN page.
The UK government says China’s cybersecurity laws require online products and services such as VPNs to be licensed by the Chinese government. Holafly, an eSIM seller, says getting around China’s restrictions can fall into a legal gray area, and that tourists should check current rules first. Read Is a VPN legal in China? before you go.
If you pay for YouTube Premium, YouTube says your subscription may be cancelled if you misrepresent your location, for example with a VPN.
YouTube Premium and YouTube Music
YouTube doesn’t offer Premium or Music Premium in mainland China. Its list of available locations includes Hong Kong and Taiwan.
YouTube says that if you travel to a country where Premium isn’t available, you won’t be able to access your membership benefits. Videos you downloaded before the trip stay available offline for 30 days. The YouTube Music app is the exception. YouTube says paying members keep their benefits and music library there even where Music Premium isn’t offered, music available in the country where you subscribed stays available for a limited time, and music downloads stay available for 30 days without an internet connection. YouTube also says it may take action on your subscription, such as cancelling it, if you travel for more than 30 days.
YouTube’s travel policy page doesn’t say how it decides which country you’re in. We couldn’t confirm whether Premium benefits work on an eSIM that routes your data through Hong Kong.
The YouTube Music app isn’t available in mainland China either, according to YouTube’s list of locations. GreatFire’s test history for music.youtube.com shows it blocked there, like the main site.
YouTube TV and YouTube Kids
YouTube TV doesn’t work in China. YouTube says you can’t access any programs on YouTube TV while traveling internationally. This is YouTube’s own rule, separate from China’s block.
YouTube’s list of places where the YouTube Kids mobile app is available includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, but not mainland China. We couldn’t confirm whether the app works for visitors on Chinese networks, a roaming eSIM or a VPN. GreatFire keeps a test history for youtubekids.com.
When YouTube was blocked
China has blocked YouTube since March 2009. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported at the time that Google saw YouTube traffic in China fall sharply. Many journalists believed the block targeted footage that appeared to show Chinese soldiers beating Tibetan monks.
Guides updated in 2026 still describe YouTube as blocked since 2009. MyChinaGuide says nothing about the block has loosened.
Hong Kong and Macau
YouTube works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. MyChinaGuide says both are outside the Great Firewall, and Holafly says YouTube remains accessible there. YouTube offers Premium, the YouTube Music app and the YouTube Kids app in Hong Kong.
YouTube’s name in China
In colloquial Chinese, YouTube is 油管 (Yóuguǎn). The MDBG Chinese dictionary gives the word’s other meaning as oil pipe.
Chinese alternatives
Chinese video platforms work on regular Chinese networks. Holafly names Youku, Tencent Video, iQIYI and Bilibili. MyChinaGuide calls Bilibili the closest thing to YouTube, built around creator-led, longer-form videos. It says Youku and iQIYI focus on long-form and licensed shows, closer to a Netflix-style catalog. BitJoy says content on these platforms is mostly in Chinese, and their interfaces aren’t designed for non-Chinese speakers.
