Yes. China is on AT&T's International Day Pass list at $12 a day for one line and $6 a day for each extra line used the same day, with at most 10 daily fees per line per bill period. AT&T adds the pass to smartphones when you arrive; turn on Data Roaming to use it. AT&T doesn't say how it routes data abroad. A 2018 first-hand report found blocked sites loading on the Day Pass, and sites that sell eSIMs disagree, so this is not confirmed.
- China is an International Day Pass destination, and so are Hong Kong and Macau. The pass costs $12 a day for one line and $6 a day for each extra line used the same day, with at most 10 daily fees per line per bill period.
- AT&T adds the Day Pass to smartphones automatically when you arrive. A 24-hour session starts when you use data, send a text or make or accept a call, including apps using data in the background.
- AT&T Elite 2.0 includes 20 GB of data a month in China with no daily fee. International Day Pass isn't available on that plan.
- AT&T doesn't publish how it routes data abroad. A 2018 first-hand report found blocked sites loading on the Day Pass. Sites that sell eSIMs disagree, and none describes a test. Not confirmed.
- Ten days of the Day Pass costs $120. Ten days of unlimited data costs $35.00 on Airalo and $37.50 on Holafly.
What AT&T includes in China
China is on AT&T’s International Day Pass destination list, last updated Oct 7, 2026. Hong Kong and Macau are listed separately. China is also on the destination list for AT&T’s Elite 2.0 plan.
| Option | Price | Data in China | Calls and texts |
|---|---|---|---|
| International Day Pass | $12 a day for one line, $6 a day for each extra line used the same day | Your plan’s data. On an unlimited plan, unlimited high-speed data | Calls to the US, China and other Day Pass destinations. Unlimited texts |
| AT&T Elite 2.0 | Included. The plan costs $110 a month for one line after AT&T’s discounts | 20 GB a month, then up to 512 Kbps | Unlimited |
Prices are from AT&T’s International Day Pass and unlimited plans pages, checked Oct 9, 2026.
- International Day Pass: AT&T charges at most 10 daily fees per line per bill period, so one line pays at most $120 in a bill period. After the tenth fee, you keep using your plan at no extra charge until the bill period ends. AT&T says data speed varies by destination.
- Automatic sign-up: if your smartphone has no international feature, AT&T adds the Day Pass when you arrive and sends a text that says how to remove it. If you remove it, pay-per-use rates apply.
- Elite 2.0: talk, text and 20 GB of data a month work in 210+ destinations, China included, with no daily fee. After 20 GB, speeds may drop to 512 Kbps for the rest of the bill cycle. You can’t add the Day Pass or buy more high-speed data on this plan.
How Day Pass charges work
A 24-hour session starts the first time you use data, send a text, or make or accept a call in China. Apps running in the background use data and start a session too. Texts you receive don’t.
You pay only for days you use your phone there. To avoid a fee on a day, put the phone in airplane mode, turn on Wi-Fi and turn off Wi-Fi Calling. Wi-Fi calls to the US cost nothing extra, but a Wi-Fi call to any other country starts a daily fee. AT&T adds the fees to your bill at the end of the bill period.
How to turn on AT&T in China
- Before you fly, sign in to your AT&T account and add International Day Pass. If you forget, AT&T adds it to smartphones when you arrive. On Elite 2.0 there is nothing to add.
- In China, turn on Data Roaming. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming. On a Dual SIM iPhone, tap your AT&T number before Cellular Data Options.
- If data doesn’t work, AT&T suggests turning the phone off for one minute, then checking that airplane mode is off and Data Roaming is on. AT&T’s international support line is +1 314 925 6925, free from your AT&T phone.
Google and WhatsApp on AT&T: what’s known
Not confirmed. We found no AT&T page that says how roaming data is routed or whether apps blocked in China work. The reports we found disagree:
- Gary Leff wrote on View from the Wing in May 2018, after a few days in Shanghai on AT&T’s Day Pass, then $10 a day: “I could access all of the sites that are generally blocked in China.” The hotel’s Wi-Fi blocked Gmail, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. A reader commenting on the post said AT&T carries the data back to its peering point in the US.
- Travelren, which sells China eSIMs, wrote in September 2026 that AT&T carries Day Pass data back to its US network and that blocked apps usually work. Its April 2026 cost check called the Day Pass “Firewalled”. Neither article describes a test.
- Gigago (November 2025) and China eSIM (May 2025), an eSIM store that Gigago runs, say Google and WhatsApp need a VPN on AT&T roaming. Neither describes a test.
BGR explained in July 2026 that a phone roaming on a Chinese network sends its traffic back to the carrier’s home country before it goes online, which is what lets roaming phones reach Facebook and YouTube. BGR didn’t name AT&T.
The only first-hand report we found is from 2018. Have a backup ready.
When you still need a VPN
The Day Pass doesn’t help on Wi-Fi. On hotel or café Wi-Fi in China, you need a VPN for blocked apps, whatever your phone plan. A VPN is also your fallback if Day Pass data doesn’t get past the firewall for you. Install and test one at home before you fly. See eSIM or VPN for China and VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China.
Cost compared with travel eSIMs
Extra cost for data in China for one line, checked Oct 9, 2026, on each provider’s site:
| Option | Data in China | 10 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T International Day Pass | Your plan’s data | $120 | $120 to $240 |
| AT&T Elite 2.0 | 20 GB a month, then up to 512 Kbps | $0 | $0 |
| Airalo | Unlimited | $35.00 | $69.00 |
| Holafly | Unlimited | $37.50 | $76.50 |
- 10 days: unlimited data on Airalo or Holafly costs $82.50 to $85 less than the Day Pass.
- 30 days: with the 10-fee cap, one line pays $120 if the whole trip falls in one bill period. A trip that runs into a second bill period can be charged up to 10 fees in each, $240 in total. Airalo costs $69.00 and Holafly $76.50.
- Two lines: a second line on the same account costs $6 a day, so 10 days for two people costs $180 on the Day Pass. Two Airalo eSIMs cost $70.00 and two Holafly eSIMs $75.00.
- Elite 2.0: China data costs nothing extra up to 20 GB a bill cycle. The plan costs $20 a month more than Premium 2.0 for one line.
The Day Pass also includes calls and texts. Speed limits on unlimited eSIM plans, and how each one routes data, are on our eSIM comparison.
