Yes, on two of Google Fi's four plans: Flexible ($10 per GB) and Unlimited Premium ($65 a month for one line) cover China, while Unlimited Standard and Unlimited Essentials don't. Older independent reports found Google, Gmail and Facebook working on Fi in China without a VPN, but Fi doesn't say how it routes data abroad, so this is not confirmed for 2026.
- Only Flexible and Unlimited Premium work in China. Unlimited Standard covers the US, Canada and Mexico, and Unlimited Essentials doesn't work outside the US.
- Data in China costs $10 per GB on Flexible. Unlimited Premium includes 50 GB of high-speed data abroad.
- Fi doesn't publish how it routes data abroad. A 2015 report and an undated user review found blocked sites working on Fi mobile data. WhatsApp is not confirmed.
- A week of unlimited data on Airalo or Holafly costs about the same as 3 GB on Fi Flexible.
- Roaming only covers mobile data. Set up a VPN at home for Wi-Fi and as a backup.
Which Fi plans cover China
Google Fi’s help page on using Fi outside the US lists China among the countries where Fi offers 5G abroad. Only two of Fi’s four plans work there.
| Plan | Price for one line | In China |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible | $20 a month, plus $10 per GB | Data at $10 per GB |
| Unlimited Premium | $65 a month | 50 GB of high-speed data abroad included |
| Unlimited Standard | $50 a month | Not covered: US, Canada and Mexico only |
| Unlimited Essentials | $35 a month | Not covered: no service outside the US |
Prices are from Google Fi’s plan comparison page, checked Oct 9, 2026. Until Oct 31, 2026, Fi’s plans page offers 50% off any unlimited plan for 12 months on new lines that bring a Google Pixel phone. Calls made from China cost $0.20 a minute on Flexible and Unlimited Premium.
Fi has two rules for travelers. You must activate and use your service in the US for at least one day before you use it abroad. And an extended period of use outside the US, typically 50 days, triggers a warning; your international data is suspended 30 days after that email.
If you’re on Unlimited Standard or Essentials, switching to Unlimited Premium takes effect immediately. Other plan switches, including switching back, take effect at the start of your next billing cycle. Fi’s page doesn’t say how a mid-cycle switch is billed.
How to turn on Fi in China
Fi says you don’t need to change your phone’s settings, contact support or set up a new SIM card. If data doesn’t connect when you land, Fi’s troubleshooting page lists these checks.
- In the Google Fi app or website, open the Home tab, select Manage plan, and turn on Service outside the US and Calls to non-US numbers. On a group plan, the plan admin turns these on for each member. Do this at home: the change needs an internet connection, and Google sites are normally blocked on Wi-Fi in China.
- Turn on data roaming. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming. On Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, then check that roaming is on.
- If there’s still no data, turn airplane mode on and off, restart the phone, or select a network manually.
Google and WhatsApp on Fi: what’s known
Not confirmed for 2026. Fi’s help pages don’t say how data abroad is routed, and they don’t mention China’s firewall. The Fi reports we found are old or undated:
- In November 2015, a traveler posted on NANOG, a mailing list for network operators, that their Project Fi phone (Fi’s former name) reached Google, Facebook, YouTube and Gmail in China. A reply explained that a roaming phone gets its IP address from the home network’s packet gateway, with “no local data break-out”.
- A Fi user’s undated review on Eat Walk Learn says Facebook, Instagram and Google worked on Fi mobile data in China, and that several apps and websites were blocked as soon as they switched to Wi-Fi.
- BGR explained in July 2026 that a phone roaming on a Chinese network sends its traffic back to the carrier’s home country before it goes online, which is what lets roaming phones reach Facebook and YouTube. BGR didn’t name Fi.
Neither Fi report mentions WhatsApp, so WhatsApp on Fi in China is not confirmed. Because the Fi-specific reports are old, have a backup ready.
When you still need a VPN
Fi’s roaming only covers mobile data. On Wi-Fi in China, you need a VPN for blocked apps, whatever your phone plan. A VPN is also your fallback if Fi’s routing has changed since those reports. Install and test one at home before you fly. See eSIM or VPN for China and VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China.
Cost compared with travel eSIMs
Extra cost for a one-week trip, checked Oct 9, 2026, on each provider’s site:
| Option | Data in China | Extra cost for a week |
|---|---|---|
| Fi Unlimited Premium ($65 a month) | 50 GB of high-speed data abroad | $0 |
| Fi Flexible ($20 a month plus data) | $10 per GB | $10 for 1 GB, $30 for 3 GB |
| Airalo | Unlimited, 7 days | $27.00 |
| Holafly | Unlimited, 7 days | $27.50 |
- Already on Unlimited Premium: China data costs nothing extra.
- On Flexible: a gigabyte or two costs less than a week of unlimited eSIM data. At about 3 GB, the cost is similar.
- On Unlimited Standard or Essentials: Fi doesn’t cover China. Unlimited Premium costs $15 a month more than Standard, or $30 more than Essentials, for one line.
Speed limits on unlimited eSIM plans, and how each one routes data, are on our eSIM comparison.
FAQ
Does Google Fi work in China without a VPN?
On Fi mobile data, older independent reports found Google, Gmail and Facebook working without a VPN, because the data went back through Fi's home network. Fi doesn't confirm this and we found no 2026 report, so it's not confirmed. On Wi-Fi in China you need a VPN.
How much does Google Fi cost in China?
On Flexible, data costs $10 per GB on top of the $20 monthly line fee. Unlimited Premium, at $65 a month for one line, includes 50 GB of high-speed data abroad. Calls from China cost $0.20 a minute on both. Prices checked Oct 9, 2026.
Does Google Fi Unlimited Standard work in China?
No. Unlimited Standard only covers the US, Canada and Mexico. Switching to Unlimited Premium takes effect immediately.
Can I use Google Fi in China for a long stay?
Fi's help page says an extended period of use outside the US, typically 50 days, triggers a warning, and your international data is suspended 30 days after that email.
