Does Telegram Work in China?
No, Telegram is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. The app opens but sticks on "Connecting...", and messages don't send or arrive. It often works on home roaming or a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, as long as your phone stays off Wi-Fi. Otherwise, use a VPN that you install and test before you fly.
Your options
Set these up before you fly.
Before you fly
- Install Telegram at home. Apple removed it from its China App Store in April 2024, and Google Play and telegram.org are blocked in China.
- Set up a travel eSIM or home roaming. Pick an eSIM that routes data outside mainland China and install it before you leave. Provider websites are likely blocked once you're in China.
- Install and test a VPN, plus a backup. You'll need one on hotel Wi-Fi. MyChinaGuide suggests a second VPN, because even good providers have bad days.
- Set up WeChat too. Use it for people you meet in China. MyChinaGuide says foreign phone numbers can register.
What happens when you open Telegram in China
Telegram is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. A July 2026 guide for Australian tourists in the Bega District News lists it among the services China has completely blocked, along with Google, WhatsApp, Signal and ChatGPT. Holafly, an eSIM seller, calls it a network-level block rather than a problem with your phone.
The app doesn’t show a clear error. MyChinaGuide, which makes a China travel app, says the connection status sticks on “Connecting…” indefinitely. Chats you already have still display, which can make the app look as if it half-works. New messages don’t send or arrive, outgoing ones sit with a clock icon, and voice and video calls don’t connect. MyChinaGuide says this is the same on China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom SIM cards, and on hotel and café Wi-Fi. Comparitech, a VPN review site, also says you can’t send or receive messages without a VPN.
Telegram’s website is blocked too, according to MyChinaGuide. GreatFire keeps a test history for telegram.org that shows it blocked.
The block dates from mid-2015. Global Voices reported that a large DDoS attack hit Telegram’s Asia-Pacific servers on July 10 that year. Two days later, the state-run People’s Daily said human rights lawyers and activists had used Telegram and its Secret Chat mode to attack the Communist Party and the government. Hong Kong Free Press reported the block on July 13. Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, told TechCrunch at the time that he didn’t think Telegram was completely blocked in China, though traffic from there had fallen. Guides updated in 2026 still describe it as blocked.
On a roaming eSIM or home roaming
A travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China gets around the block. MyChinaGuide says international roaming data isn’t filtered by the Great Firewall, so Telegram works as soon as you land. Airalo, an eSIM provider, says every package of its that covers China, including its Regional Asia and Global eSIMs, uses international data routing, so you don’t need a VPN. Holafly says some international eSIMs route your data through a network outside mainland China.
Not every eSIM works this way. Salil Kanhere, a cybersecurity expert at UNSW, told the Bega District News that certain travel eSIMs bypass mainland filtering by routing traffic through offshore gateways such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia. The paper says a local Chinese SIM or a China-specific eSIM typically remains subject to local filtering. Check how a plan routes data before you buy, and compare plans on our eSIM page.
Roaming on your home SIM can work the same way. The Bega District News says roaming data is in many cases routed through your home carrier or an overseas gateway, so some apps that are usually blocked might still work. Holafly says a roaming connection may route through an international network, which can let you reach Telegram. Ask your carrier what roaming in China costs.
Either way, it only works on mobile data. MyChinaGuide says that once your phone joins hotel Wi-Fi, you’re behind the Great Firewall and Telegram goes silent again. Airalo says you have full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. Turn Wi-Fi off, or connect a VPN while you’re on Wi-Fi.
Buy and install the eSIM before you go. The Bega District News says provider websites are likely blocked once you’re inside China. See eSIM or VPN for China? for when each one makes sense.
With a VPN
A VPN also gets you past the block, and it’s the option for hotel Wi-Fi, where a roaming eSIM doesn’t help. Comparitech says you can reach Telegram in China by connecting to a VPN on your phone or tablet. MyChinaGuide says that over a working VPN, text messages are instant and voice calls are clear with a slight delay.
Not every VPN gets through. Gizmodo, in a VPN guide with affiliate links, says a free VPN can’t unblock Telegram in China because the firewall detects and blocks it. Holafly says VPNs can be less reliable in China, and some providers may be blocked or hard to reach after you arrive. MyChinaGuide says pressure from the firewall comes in waves, and even good providers have bad days around major political events. The UK government also says internet access in China can be limited around key political events and dates.
Install and test the VPN before you fly. MyChinaGuide suggests setting up a second one as a backup. Compare the VPNs we track on our VPN page.
Telegram’s built-in proxy
Telegram has its own tool for getting around blocks. Telegram says its proxy feature, MTProxy, “allows users to circumvent internet censorship that restricts Telegram access in certain regions”, by hiding Telegram’s IP address and disguising the traffic. Anyone can run a proxy. You add one in the app’s settings with its server, port and secret. Telegram says the proxy’s operator may promote a channel, which then shows up in your chat list.
MyChinaGuide says not to rely on proxies in China. It says public proxy addresses are exactly what the firewall is good at finding, and popular ones get blocked within days, sometimes hours.
For foreign visitors
The block applies to visitors too. The Bega District News tells tourists that Telegram and the other blocked apps stay blocked on hotel and café Wi-Fi, and on a SIM card bought after you arrive. Visitors who use Telegram in China do it through home roaming, a travel eSIM or a VPN set up before the trip.
The UK government says China’s cybersecurity laws require online products and services such as VPNs to be licensed by the Chinese government. Holafly says unauthorized VPN services are restricted in China, though enforcement varies in practice. MyChinaGuide says China’s rules target VPN providers rather than individual tourists, and that enforcement against visitors checking their messages is effectively unheard of. It still calls this a gray zone. Read Is a VPN legal in China? before you go.
For people you meet in China, use WeChat. MyChinaGuide calls it China’s default for everything and says foreign phone numbers can register. See WeChat in China.
The block covers mainland China. Freedom House says in its 2026 report that the mainland’s internet censorship regime does not yet apply in Hong Kong. We couldn’t confirm Telegram’s status in Hong Kong or Macau from a current source.
Downloading Telegram in China
Install Telegram before you travel. Apple removed it from its China App Store in April 2024, along with WhatsApp, Signal and Threads. MacRumors reported that China’s national internet regulator ordered the removal over unspecified national security concerns. On the App Store, the app is called Telegram Messenger, from Telegram FZ-LLC.
On Android, Telegram offers its app on Google Play and as an APK file on telegram.org. MyChinaGuide says Google Play and Telegram’s website are both blocked in China, and that app stores inside China don’t carry Telegram.
