Does WhatsApp Work in China?
No, WhatsApp is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. It often works on home roaming or a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, as long as your phone stays off Wi-Fi. Otherwise, use a VPN that you install and test before you fly.
Your options
Set these up before you fly.
Before you fly
- Install WhatsApp at home. Apple removed it from its China App Store in April 2024 on the orders of China's internet regulator.
- Set up a travel eSIM or home roaming. Install the eSIM before you leave, because provider websites are likely blocked in China. Turn on data roaming when you land.
- Install and test a VPN at home. Apple removed major VPN apps from its China App Store in 2017.
- Set up WeChat too. Create the account before your trip, because registering in China can be troublesome.
What happens when you open WhatsApp in China
WhatsApp is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. Airalo, an eSIM provider, says it’s generally inaccessible on local networks, along with Google, Instagram, Facebook, X and YouTube. Nomad, another eSIM seller, says WhatsApp connections on Chinese internet providers are usually disrupted or completely inaccessible.
The block dates from 2017. TechCrunch reported in September 2017 that text messages, photos and videos had stopped working for many users in mainland China. Some could still send and receive messages. In July that year, sending photos, videos and files had been blocked for a few weeks.
Reports still differ on whether anything gets through. The Helpful Panda, a travel blog with affiliate links, said in February 2026 that text messages could be sent without a VPN, but photos, videos, voice calls and video calls could not. The Bega District News, in a July 2026 guide for Australian tourists, says WhatsApp is completely blocked. Plan for it not to work on Chinese networks.
Other foreign messaging apps are blocked too. The same guide lists Telegram and Signal. See Telegram in China.
On a roaming eSIM or home roaming
Nomad says travel eSIMs connect to Chinese mobile networks but route your data through servers outside China, which avoids the local restrictions. Airalo says its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs work this way, so you don’t need a VPN for WhatsApp. Holafly says you can use WhatsApp on its China eSIM without installing a separate VPN, because the plan includes one.
Not every eSIM does this. The Bega District News says certain travel eSIMs get around mainland filtering by routing traffic through gateways such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia. Check how a plan routes data before you buy. Our provider pages, such as GigSky and CUniq, say what is known about how each one routes data. Compare plans on our eSIM page, and see eSIM or VPN for China? for when each one makes sense.
Roaming on your home SIM can work the same way. The Bega District News says roaming data is in many cases routed through your home carrier or an overseas gateway, so some blocked apps might still work. In the same article, Dr Marina Zhang, an associate professor at the University of Technology Sydney, says she can use Google, WhatsApp and Gmail on her Optus SIM with international roaming switched on. AFAR also names an international roaming package from your home carrier as a way to use WhatsApp in China. Ask your carrier what roaming in China costs before you go. For prices and setup, see our guides to Google Fi, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone UK, EE, Telstra and Optus.
Either way, it only works on mobile data. Airalo says you get full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. Once your phone joins Wi-Fi, WhatsApp is blocked again. Turn Wi-Fi off, or connect a VPN while you’re on Wi-Fi.
Set the eSIM up at home. Holafly says to install it before you leave and turn on data roaming when you reach China. The Bega District News warns that provider websites are likely blocked once you’re inside China.
With a VPN
Nomad describes a VPN as tunneling your connection through the Great Firewall to servers in other countries. AFAR names a VPN as one of two ways to use WhatsApp in China, along with an international roaming package. On hotel Wi-Fi, where a roaming eSIM doesn’t help, that leaves a VPN.
VPN connections can be unreliable. Nomad says VPNs are increasingly blocked in China, and you may need to try several servers to find one that works. ExpressVPN’s China status page, updated in February 2026, says connections may take longer than usual and that keeping the app up to date is critical. The UK government says internet access in China can be limited around key political events and dates.
Install and test the VPN before you fly. Apple removed major VPN apps from its China App Store in 2017. Compare the VPNs we track on our VPN page. The UK government also notes that China’s cybersecurity laws require VPNs to be licensed by the government, so read Is a VPN legal in China? before you go.
At the airport
Airport Wi-Fi is a local Chinese network, so WhatsApp is blocked on it, as on hotel Wi-Fi. Logging in can also be a problem. The Helpful Panda says you’ll probably need a Chinese phone number to use airport Wi-Fi. At Shanghai Pudong, the city government says you can scan your passport’s photo page on the Wi-Fi login page instead.
To use WhatsApp when you land, turn Wi-Fi off and use your travel eSIM or home roaming data. Holafly says to turn on data roaming once you reach China. If you rely on a VPN, connect it once you’re online.
Pudong offers 7-, 15- and 30-day China Telecom SIM cards to travelers with a passport, at a service center in the public arrivals area. A Chinese SIM card won’t get you past the block. The Bega District News says blocked apps stay blocked if you buy a SIM card when you arrive.
For foreign visitors
The block applies to visitors too. AFAR’s China travel guide says you can only use WhatsApp with a VPN or an international roaming package from your home carrier. Nomad says tourists can use it if they set up a VPN or a travel eSIM before arriving.
For people you meet in China, use WeChat. AFAR calls it essential for keeping in touch with tour guides and hotel concierges. It advises creating your account well before the trip, because registering in China can be troublesome. See WeChat in China.
Downloading WhatsApp in China
Apple removed WhatsApp from its China App Store on April 19, 2024. Apple said China’s internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China, ordered the removal over national security concerns. Install WhatsApp before you travel.

FAQ
Does WhatsApp work in China without a VPN?
Not on Chinese mobile data or Wi-Fi. Without a VPN, it can work on home roaming or a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, but only while your phone uses that mobile data and not Wi-Fi.
Does WhatsApp work in China with a VPN?
Yes, when the VPN connects. VPNs can be slow or blocked in China, and Apple removed major VPN apps from its China App Store in 2017, so install and test yours before you fly.
Does WhatsApp work in China with an eSIM?
It depends on the eSIM. Travel eSIMs that route your data outside mainland China, such as Airalo's China eSIM, work without a VPN. A SIM card you buy after you arrive is a local connection, so WhatsApp stays blocked on it.
Does WhatsApp work in China on international roaming?
Often, yes. Roaming data is in many cases routed through your home carrier or an overseas gateway, so blocked apps can work. Check what your carrier charges for China, and keep Wi-Fi off so your phone uses roaming data.
Does WhatsApp work at airports in China?
Not on airport Wi-Fi, which is a local Chinese network. If you have home roaming or a travel eSIM, turn Wi-Fi off when you land and use mobile data, or connect your VPN. A Chinese SIM card bought at the airport doesn't get around the block.
Does WhatsApp work in China for foreigners and tourists?
Not on Chinese networks. Visitors who use hotel Wi-Fi or buy a SIM card on arrival still find it blocked. Tourists use it through home roaming, a travel eSIM or a VPN set up before the trip.
