FAQ

Does CUniq work in China without a VPN?

Not confirmed by CUniq. Its product pages, terms and FAQs don't say where mainland data exits or whether blocked apps work. ezone.hk (October 2026) says WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Google Maps work on CUniq's Chinese Mainland and Macau card without a VPN, because China Unicom Hong Kong issues it. It doesn't describe a test. HK01 (July 2026) reports Francis Fong, honorary president of the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, as saying Hong Kong data cards with mainland roaming let people reach YouTube, Threads and Facebook. No one has published IP tests.

Does it come with a mainland China number?

Not on its China data plans. CUniq's Chinese Mainland and Macau plans, its Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau plans and the CUniq Travel SIM have no calls or SMS. A mainland number is an add-on for designated CUniq monthly plans and the CUniq Monthly SIM, a contract-free Hong Kong SIM with a Hong Kong number. It costs HK$10 a month, and you must pass mainland real-name registration. CUniq's FAQ accepts three documents for that registration. They are the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, the PRC Resident Identity Card and the Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents. Foreign passports aren't on the list.

Can tourists buy it online?

Yes. CUniq sells its China eSIMs online in English and emails the eSIM QR code after you pay. It also ships physical SIMs abroad. That takes 30 to 45 working days and costs HK$50 to addresses in Asia or HK$90 elsewhere. The Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau SIM must be registered in your real name to work in Hong Kong.

Can I activate it in mainland China?

No. CUniq says that since August 1, 2026, new prepaid SIMs with mainland roaming must be activated in Hong Kong or another listed place before you enter mainland China. Its list covers more than 180 countries and regions, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia. On the Chinese Mainland and Macau plans, activating early doesn't start the plan's days. They start when you first use data in mainland China or Macau, or 30 days after activation if you haven't.

How much does it cost?

CUniq prices its plans in Hong Kong dollars. On October 9, 2026, its eSIM store sold Chinese Mainland and Macau plans from HK$21 for 4 GB over 2 days up to HK$508 for 100 GB over 180 days. A Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau plan cost HK$202 for 45 GB over 365 days. The CUniq Travel SIM's mainland pack had a standard price of HK$12 a day.

Which network does it use in mainland China?

China Unicom, for the CUniq Travel SIM. CUniq's roaming list for that SIM names China Unicom 4G in mainland China. The pages for CUniq's China data plans don't name the network, but ezone.hk says the Chinese Mainland and Macau card also uses China Unicom.

Does CUniq include a VPN?

Not confirmed. CUniq's pages don't mention a VPN.

Can I use it as a hotspot?

Yes on the CUniq Travel SIM, which CUniq says supports tethering. The pages for its China data plans don't say.

Can I get a refund?

CUniq's eSIM terms say no cancellation or refund is accepted once you buy an eSIM.
