Does Vodafone UK Roaming Work in China?

Short answer

Yes. Mainland China is in Vodafone UK's Zone D. Pay monthly customers pay £8 a day if they bought their plan on or after 11 August 2021, or £6 a day on older plans, to use their UK calls, texts and up to 25GB of data. Pay as you go customers pay 12p per MB or buy an Around the World Extra. Vodafone doesn't say how it routes roaming data, and we found no first-hand report from a Vodafone UK customer, so whether WhatsApp and Google work on it is not confirmed.

  • China is in Vodafone UK's Zone D for pay monthly customers, and so are Hong Kong and Macau. Vodafone's Global Roam plans include 84 destinations in Zones A, B and C, not Zone D, so pay monthly customers pay a daily fee in China.
  • Pay monthly roaming in China costs £8 a day if you bought your plan on or after 11 August 2021 and £6 a day before that. Each fee covers 24 hours from when roaming is detected. Vodafone raised the fee from £7.86 to £8 on 14 April 2026.
  • On pay as you go, data costs 12p per MB. An 8-day Around the World Extra with 2GB costs £19.31 and a 15-day one with 4GB costs £30.84. Pay as you go Plus customers must buy an Extra to roam.
  • Vodafone doesn't publish how it routes roaming data. A May 2026 travel advisory for UK travelers says UK carrier roaming gets past the firewall. An eSIM seller says Vodafone users need a VPN. Neither describes a test. Not confirmed.
  • Ten days of pay monthly roaming at £8 a day costs £80. Ten days of unlimited data costs £27.50 on Airalo and £31.00 on Holafly.

What Vodafone UK includes in China

Mainland China is in Zone D on Vodafone UK’s list of pay monthly roaming destinations. Hong Kong and Macau are in Zone D too. Zone D isn’t part of Vodafone’s Global Roam plans, which cover 84 destinations in Zones A, B and C, so pay monthly customers pay a daily fee in China. On pay as you go, China is one of 74 Around the World destinations.

Option Price Data in China Calls and texts

Pay monthly, plan bought before 11 August 2021 £6 a day Your UK allowance, up to 25GB Your UK allowance
Pay as you go, no Extra Pay per use 12p per MB 60p a minute to make calls, 36p a minute to receive them, 8p a text

15-day Around the World Extra (pay as you go) £30.84 4GB 200 minutes, 200 texts

Prices are from Vodafone UK’s Roaming Charge Checker for China, checked Oct 9, 2026. Vodafone says 4G data is available in China.

  • Calls on pay monthly: calls to UK numbers are included in the daily fee. A call to a Chinese number costs the same as calling China from the UK, on top of the daily fee. Receiving standard calls and texts is free.
  • Pay as you go Plus: you must buy an Extra to use your phone abroad.
  • Data-only Extra: Vodafone also sells an 8-day Around the World Extra with 2GB of data only, for £13.68.

How the daily fee works

A day starts when Vodafone detects roaming and lasts 24 hours. If roaming is detected at 10am, the fee covers you until 10am the next day. Vodafone raised the daily fee for Zones C and D from £7.86 to £8 on 14 April 2026.

If your UK data allowance is more than 25GB, you can use 25GB a month while roaming. After that, Vodafone charges £3.84 per GB. If your allowance is smaller, going over it costs what it would in the UK.

Roaming is meant for short trips. If you roam for more than 62 days, or use more abroad than in the UK, within four months, Vodafone may add charges. It sends a text 14 days before it does.

How to turn on Vodafone roaming in China

  1. Before you fly, turn off the Data Roaming Bar. In My Vodafone or the My Vodafone app, select Manage Controls and Limits, go to Data Roaming Bar and select Turn off. Also check that Spend Manager isn’t set to £0.
  2. On pay as you go, a new SIM must first be activated with a top-up of at least £5 or a Big Value Bundle, or it won’t work abroad. An Extra starts as soon as you buy it. If you buy one abroad, Vodafone says to connect to Wi-Fi first.
  3. In China, turn on data roaming. On iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Data Roaming. On a Dual SIM iPhone, tap your Vodafone number before Mobile Data Options.
  4. If you can’t connect, Vodafone suggests restarting the phone, selecting a network manually and checking that roaming bars are off. Vodafone customer services is on +44 7836 191 191 from abroad.

Google and WhatsApp on Vodafone UK: what’s known

Not confirmed. We found no Vodafone UK page that says how roaming data is routed or whether apps blocked in China work. The reports we found disagree, and none describes a test:

  • Charity Challenge’s China internet advisory, written for travelers leaving the UK and updated in May 2026, says UK carrier roaming “bypasses the firewall but is significantly more expensive”. It doesn’t name a network. It recommends Holafly eSIMs.
  • China eSIM, which sells eSIMs, wrote in June 2025 that Vodafone customers in China can’t reach Google services, WhatsApp and other blocked apps without a VPN.

BGR explained in July 2026 that a phone roaming on a Chinese network sends its traffic back to the carrier’s home country before it goes online, which is what lets roaming phones reach Facebook and YouTube. BGR didn’t name Vodafone.

We found no first-hand report from a Vodafone UK customer in China. Have a backup ready. Our WhatsApp in China page covers other ways to reach it.

When you still need a VPN

Roaming doesn’t help on Wi-Fi. On hotel or café Wi-Fi in China, you need a VPN for blocked apps, whatever your phone plan. A VPN is also your fallback if Vodafone roaming data doesn’t get past the firewall for you. Install and test one before you leave the UK. See eSIM or VPN for China and VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China.
