Set up before you fly

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your carrier.
  2. Buy the plan and install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. The pack activates when the eSIM connects to a network in China.
  3. On arrival, switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Test with Wi-Fi off. Airport and hotel Wi-Fi in China is filtered, so WhatsApp won't work over it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Plans from $6 for 3 GB over 1 day
  • Hotspot allowed with no data cap
  • Says WhatsApp chat keeps working after the data runs out, on packs of 3 GB and up
  • Unlimited plans for 3 to 30 days

Cons

  • Jetpac's own China guides disagree on whether Google works
  • No phone number
  • Unlimited plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day
  • Installing the eSIM counts as use, which limits refunds

FAQ

Does Jetpac work in China without a VPN?

Jetpac's own guides disagree. Its June 2026 China guide says a Jetpac eSIM routes traffic via international networks, so no VPN is needed. Two August 2026 Jetpac guides say Google stays blocked on Jetpac's China eSIM, while WhatsApp works; one names Google Search, Gmail and Google Maps. Find Your eSIM found Google, WhatsApp and Instagram working on Jetpac's Asia plan in China, with data routed through Singapore. It lists no test of the China-only plan.

Does Jetpac include a VPN?

Gizmodo and Traveltomtom say Jetpac's China plans include a VPN. Jetpac's China page doesn't mention one, and its August 2026 China guide suggests keeping a VPN installed as a backup with any provider. We list it as not confirmed.

Which network does it use?

Jetpac's June 2026 China guide says China Unicom and China Telecom, with automatic switching. Gizmodo's two-week 2026 trip ran on China Unicom, switching between 4G and 5G. Traveltomtom also lists China Unicom, with 5G.

What still works when the data runs out?

Jetpac says packs of 3 GB and above include free WhatsApp chat, Uber, Grab and Google Maps navigation after the data runs out. Uber and Grab don't operate in mainland China, so Jetpac's own China guide points travelers to Didi. Its August 2026 China guide also says Google Maps stays blocked on its China eSIM.
