Short answer

Yes. T-Mobile lists China among its 215+ roaming countries and destinations. Experience Beyond includes 15 GB of high-speed data there and Experience More includes 5 GB. On Essentials you need an International Pass for data, from $10 for one day. A tour company's writer found WhatsApp and Google Maps working on T-Mobile roaming data without a VPN, but T-Mobile doesn't say how it routes data abroad, so this is not confirmed.

  • Experience Beyond and Go5G Next include 15 GB of high-speed data in China. Experience More, Go5G Plus and Magenta MAX include 5 GB. After that, data is unlimited at up to 256 kbps.
  • Essentials includes free texting but no data abroad. An International Pass costs $10 for 1 day, $50 for 10 days or $75 for 30 days.
  • Calls in China cost $0.50 a minute, double the rate before June 25, 2026. Texts are free.
  • T-Mobile doesn't publish how it routes data abroad. One undated first-hand report found WhatsApp and Google Maps working on T-Mobile data in China, and 2015 reader reports found Facebook and YouTube working. Two eSIM sellers say they're blocked. Not confirmed.
  • On Essentials, a 10-day pass costs $50. Ten days of unlimited data costs $35.00 on Airalo and $37.50 on Holafly.

What T-Mobile includes in China

T-Mobile lists China among the 215+ countries and destinations where its plans include roaming. What you get there depends on your plan.

Plan Data in China Texts Calls
Better Value 30 GB high-speed, then unlimited at up to 256 kbps Free $0.50 a minute
Experience Beyond, Go5G Next 15 GB high-speed, then unlimited at up to 256 kbps Free $0.50 a minute
Experience More, Go5G Plus, Magenta MAX 5 GB high-speed, then unlimited at up to 256 kbps Free $0.50 a minute
Essentials Not included; buy an International Pass Free $0.50 a minute

Plan details are from T-Mobile’s China roaming page and its international plans page, checked Oct 9, 2026. If your plan isn’t listed, check its roaming benefits in the T-Life app.

The call rate doubled from $0.25 a minute on June 25, 2026, according to Holafly’s T-Mobile roaming guide. TmoNews reported the planned change on June 12, 2026.

International Pass

If your plan has no data abroad, or you need more high-speed data, you can add an International Pass. Every pass includes unlimited calls, and you can use its data as a mobile hotspot.

Pass High-speed data Price
1 Day 2 GB $10
10 Day 15 GB $50
30 Day 30 GB $75

Prices are from T-Mobile’s International Pass page, checked Oct 9, 2026. In June 2026, TmoNews listed the 10-day pass at $35 and the 30-day pass at $50, so older guides may show lower prices. An FAQ on T-Mobile’s China page still lists a 1-day pass with 512 MB for $5.

How to turn on T-Mobile in China

  1. Before you leave, use your phone on T-Mobile’s US network and make a call. T-Mobile’s roaming checklist says a device must do this before it works abroad.
  2. If you’re on Essentials or want more data, buy an International Pass before you fly. In the T-Life app, select your line, tap Manage Add-Ons and Data, then pick a One-time Data Pass. You can also buy one at My.T-Mobile.com, or from the link in the welcome text T-Mobile sends when you arrive.
  3. Turn on data roaming. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming. On Android: open Settings, tap Connections or Wireless Networks, and turn on Data Roaming.

T-Mobile’s travel benefits are meant for short trips. If more than half of your usage is on networks abroad in a billing cycle, you get a warning. If it continues, T-Mobile notifies you after three months that your international data will be blocked.

Google and WhatsApp on T-Mobile: what’s known

Not confirmed. We found no T-Mobile page that says how roaming data is routed or whether blocked apps work in China. The reports we found disagree:

  • IntoTravelChina, a China tour company, says in an undated article that its writer used T-Mobile roaming on a trip. WhatsApp messages came through, Google Maps loaded and Gmail synced.
  • In November 2015, View from the Wing explained that roaming data is handled by the home network. Two readers commenting on the post reported reaching blocked sites, including Facebook and YouTube, on T-Mobile roaming at slow speeds. A third T-Mobile customer wrote that sites were blocked again after about three days.
  • Two sites that sell China eSIMs say the opposite. Travelren (April 2026) says T-Mobile’s China roaming goes through China Mobile and that Google, Gmail, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked. China eSIM (May 2025) says T-Mobile roaming doesn’t get past the blocks. Neither describes a test.

BGR explained in July 2026 that a phone roaming on a Chinese network sends its traffic back to the carrier’s home country before it goes online, which is what lets roaming phones reach Facebook and YouTube. BGR didn’t name T-Mobile.

Most first-hand reports say blocked apps work on T-Mobile data, but none of them is a dated 2026 test. Have a backup ready.

When you still need a VPN

T-Mobile roaming only covers mobile data. On Wi-Fi in China, you need a VPN for blocked apps, whatever your phone plan. A VPN is also your fallback if T-Mobile data doesn’t get past the firewall for you. Install and test one at home before you fly. See eSIM or VPN for China and VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China.

Cost compared with travel eSIMs

Extra cost for data in China, checked Oct 9, 2026, on each provider’s site:

Option Data in China 10 days 30 days
T-Mobile Experience Beyond 15 GB high-speed included, then up to 256 kbps $0 $0
T-Mobile Experience More 5 GB high-speed included, then up to 256 kbps $0 $0
T-Mobile International Pass 15 GB (10 days) or 30 GB (30 days) $50 $75
Airalo Unlimited $35.00 $69.00
Holafly Unlimited $37.50 $76.50
  • On Experience Beyond: China data costs nothing extra until you pass 15 GB.
  • On Experience More: the first 5 GB costs nothing extra. After that, data slows to 256 kbps unless you buy a pass.
  • On Essentials: you need a pass for data. For 10 days, unlimited data on Airalo or Holafly costs $12.50 to $15 less than the 10-day pass. For 30 days, the prices are close: $69.00 on Airalo, $75 for the pass and $76.50 on Holafly.

Speed limits on unlimited eSIM plans, and how each one routes data, are on our eSIM comparison.
