Set up before you fly

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your carrier. Trip.com says to dial *#06# and look for an EID.
  2. Buy the plan and install the eSIM before you fly in the Trip.com app or by scanning the QR code, while online. Each QR code works on one phone only.
  3. On arrival, switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line. If it won't connect, enter the APN from the listing (cmhk on the mainland-only eSIM) and restart.
  4. Test with Wi-Fi off. Airport and hotel Wi-Fi in China is filtered, so WhatsApp won't work over it.

FAQ

Does Trip.com eSIM work in China without a VPN?

Trip.com says yes. Its September 2026 eSIM guide says data routes through overseas or Hong Kong gateways, so no VPN is needed. Its Mainland China 5G eSIM listing says apps from outside mainland China get a Singapore IP. Unusual Nomad warns that routing and app support vary between Trip.com packages and suggests buying one that names the app you need. Hidden China Travel found ChatGPT working on a Trip.com eSIM in Yunnan without a separate VPN, but didn't test Google or WhatsApp.

Which versions does Trip.com sell?

Trip.com is a marketplace, and each listing has its own networks and rules. The main China listings cover mainland China only; mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau; or those three plus Taiwan. The Taiwan version needs real-name verification before you use it in Taiwan. The mainland-only and Taiwan listings name ChatGPT in their titles. The China, Hong Kong and Macau listing doesn't, and says the TikTok app can't be used in mainland China.

Does Trip.com include a VPN?

Not confirmed. Trip.com's April 2026 India guide says its plans come with built-in "tunneling" that unblocks Western apps. The listings don't offer a VPN app, and the mainland-only listing describes Hong Kong and Singapore IPs instead.

Which network does it use?

The mainland-only eSIM uses China Mobile. The China, Hong Kong and Macau eSIM lists China Mobile or China Unicom in the mainland, CSL or SmarTone in Hong Kong, and CTM in Macau.

What happens when the data runs out?

On the mainland-only and China, Hong Kong and Macau eSIMs, speed drops to 384 kbps until the daily data resets or the plan ends. The 100 GB-a-day plans capped at 10 Mbps keep that speed. The Taiwan version's 10 GB plan stops when the data is used up.
